Montana Fishing School

John Hudgens Fly Fishing

Montana Fishing School guest instructor John Hudgens of The Anglers Academy teaching the finer skillset of approaching and presenting a dry fly to rising fish.

The Montana Fishing School was founded with the idea of helping anglers of all skill levels improve their fishing knowledge to have a more enjoyable experience on the water. After nearly a decade of running schools we’re happy to have seen the full spectrum of anglers come through our program leaving with a higher fishiness level than when they came. The weekish long course is full of technical knowledge ranging from knots and fly selection to “how-to’s” on dry fly fishing and streamer tactics. We also spend a fair bit of time working on tactile skills such as casting techniques and fly placement, both on the water and off.

For an instructor of these courses, the most rewarding facet is from the interaction we have with our students. We’ve had advanced anglers working on very specific skills and rank new beginners who are picking up a fly rod for the first time. The challenge is meeting each individual where they are at and the reward is seeding them all grow in their own way. Every May, during the peak of the fishing season on the Missouri River, we take a break from our busy guide schedule and run our most popular course-Master the Missouri. It’s a special week for us during the year and we’ve found many of our students feel the same way too.
